Finding Empowerment through the PathWays Program

Davina Armijo is a single mother of four girls under the age of 10 who lives in West Dallas. When she first came to Brother Bill’s Helping Hand she was discouraged and exhausted. She was unemployed, without a high school diploma, and was desperate to find a way to provide for her family.

Davina initially came to Brother Bill’s Helping Hand looking for support with food, but quickly learned about all the additional educational and empowerment opportunities offered to West Dallas residents. Davina enrolled in PathWays, a job training program for women, where she heard of her worth in God’s eyes, and where her self-confidence began to be restored. She upgraded her computer skills, learned how to apply for jobs online, and became better prepared for interviews.

Through Faith & Finances she learned how to manage her money, and in other PathWays volunteer-led classes she gained important health information for women, how to study God’s Word through Bible Study, and even visited potential employers throughout the city.

Upon graduation from PathWays, Davina was immediately hired by a long-time partner of Brother Bill’s Helping Hand, Sonny Bryan’s Smokehouse. Davina worked in both catering and sales for Sonny Bryan’s. While working, Davina earned her GED and she now attends classes at Eastfield College. She is proud of the woman she has become, and the role model she is for her daughters. Davina is a self-assured, self-sufficient woman we are proud to call our neighbor.
